Paper mache fruit shakers

Paper Mache Fruit Shakers

Make shakers shaped like fruit and use them whenever that fruit appears in a song.

Materials

  • Vegetable spray or cooking oil
  • Pieces of fruit
  • Newspaper torn into small pieces
  • Large tray to catch mess
  • Paste made from 3 parts water to 1 part white glue
  • Acrylic paints and clear water-based polyurethane
  • Paint brushes and optional disposable gloves

Instructions

Coat the fruit lightly with oil. Dip newspaper in the glue mixture, remove excess, and completely cover the fruit with several layers. Let it dry for a couple of days. Cut it in half with a serrated knife, remove the fruit and skin, and discard or compost them. Fill the paper fruit, tape the halves together, then add several more glue-dipped layers and let dry. Sand rough edges, paint, and seal with polyurethane.

Comments: Find songs that mention the fruits you use. Try I Like to Eat Apples and Bananas, Mango Fandango, or Shake, Shake, Shake Your Apples.
