African Tambourine
A paper-mache bowl with shells or buttons that jingle as it moves.
Materials
- Jar to support a balloon
- One balloon
- Masking tape
- Awl or ice pick
- Hot glue and glue gun
- Newspaper strips
- White glue and water (1 part glue to 3 parts water)
- Acrylic paint
- 1¾-inch cloth or duct tape
- Yarn or string
- Cowry shells, buttons, or beads
Instructions
Blow up the balloon to about two-thirds full, set it in a jar, and tape it lightly so it does not roll. Dip newspaper strips in the glue mixture, remove excess, cover the top half of the balloon with several layers, and let it dry for two days. Pop and remove the balloon, cut an even edge around the bottom, and cover the edge with cloth or duct tape. Punch holes around the bowl below the tape, then thread yarn through them and attach shells or buttons loosely on the outside.
