Rocks in the Crust of the Earth

Lyrics
I had lots of fun with this song in my concerts this summer! You can print out the pages
with the names of the rocks, and use them to explain the following:
• The crust of the earth is the top layer; the layer we see.
• It is made up of three kinds of rocks.
• As you hold up each picture, point to the word and say it
(the pictures above each word will help children learn and remember what
distinguishes each kind of rock)
an easy non-fiction book about rocks from the library. One of my favorites is, Is There a
Dinosaur in your Backyard?, by Spencer Christian.
You might want to mount the 3 rock pages on card stock, and let a child hold each one.
Have each child raise and lower the correct rock as you sing about it. This is how I sang
the song this summer, and children of all ages loved it- and knew about rocks by the
end of the song!
CHORUS
Igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary
Igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary
Igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary
These are the rocks in the crust of the earth
Igneous rocks are from the lava that flows
From the mighty volcanoes
When that lava is good and cool
Igneous rocks will form, that's the rule (chorus)
Metamorphic rocks are the king of change
Over time they will rearrange
Add a lot of pressure and get them hot
What they are becomes what they're not (chorus)
Sedimentary rocks are like last night's dinner
Leftovers made into something new
Layer upon layer over lots of time
Fabulous fossils are what you may find (chorus)
sedimentary
igneous
metamorphic
