This simple marching song is great for building rhythm and for gross motor skills! Every note in the song (except the last note) is the same length and matches the marching step, so the body and voice are in sync. This is a fun way to involve the whole body in phonemic awareness, one of the six skills needed for reading readiness. Before playing this song, talk about marching and how it's different than just walking, and involves everyone making the same rhythm. Exaggerate arm and leg movements, lifting knees and swinging arms (bent or not) very deliberately. Have children practice this in place before you begin. Of course you'll want to tie it in with the calendar and the month of March! Depending on the ages of your children, you can point out that names of the month are capitalized, and March sounds the same as march, but they have two different meanings. Don't you love words?
